zittau, an area historically known as the ‚black triangle‘ due to high air pollution from coal works, is located at the borders where germany, poland and czech republic met. to help diy-homemakers focus on environmental awareness, the exhibition hall is co2 neutral. it symbolizes a promise for an environmentally friendly future and demonstrates how this could be achieved. plants with a high rate of co2-to-oxygen transfer are selected to keep spaces temperate. as an additional energy source, there is a combined heat and power plant, operated with rapeseed oil. the building takes advantage of the sun’s movement to achieve maximum solar energy input for heating and to support interior greenery which is reflected in its shape; ‚form follows sun‘.
